“The Secret Sharer”: Character Analysis of Joseph Conrad’s Captain and Leggatt in this Late Nineteenth Century Sea Novel
[ send me this paper ]
The author of this paper asserts that despite Conrad’s continued emphasis of the similarities between the captain and Leggatt, these characters are really more complimentary than similar. The conclusion is reached that both their fates and their backgrounds are completely disparate. Even the manners in which the captain and Leggatt acknowledge their own weaknesses are more complimentary of each other than they are similar. Leggatt has learned to live with his shortcomings, even to come to terms with himself. The captain, on the other hand, is almost always in a perpetual state of self doubt. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

The author highlights the main points presented in the article and emphasizes that is useful not only in detailing the Supreme Court ruling but also in outlining the set of circumstances under which it occurred. It is just as useful, however, in the fact that it assesses what the ruling could mean to Americans.

"National Geographic": Political Propaganda or Insight into the Exotic and Fascinating?
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page discussion of the criticism that has been waged by some authors against "National Geographic". Analyzing those criticisms and evaluating them against one specific article in particular this paper concludes that "National Geographic" is not a political publication and it is not intended to be. The publication's "images are formed, selected and controlled, purveyed and read" (as one author has contended) all right but they are presented for the specific purpose of giving us a view of the exotic and the interesting not the political and controversial. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

A Comparison of the Official Web Sites of the Democrats and the Republicans
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page comparison of the web presence of these two political parties. This paper compares and contrasts the official web sites pointing out formatting and information differences. The author asserts that both parties pride themselves on providing information to the voting public but with just a brief review it becomes obvious that much of this information is really disinformation, information designed to cloud and confuse the facts. One party, however, is perhaps more guilty of this than is the other. No additional sources are listed.

A Critical Analysis of John Hospers’ “Argument Against Skepticism”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page report analyzing John Hospers’ “Argument Against Skepticism”. John Hospers’ “Argument Against Skepticism” provides several requirements and conditions for “knowing”: propositions must be true, must be believed to be true and evidence must be available in support of the propositions. The question of evidence remains controversial for the most part as Hospers and critics submit that the degree of evidence must be good enough for those to believe it. “Knowing” is also considered by Hospers to have a “weak” and “strong” sense in which a “weak” sense is used by most people on a daily basis and is based on individuals’ having good reason to belief a proposition is true based on the evidence whereas a “strong” sense of knowing has absolutely conclusive evidence in support of it and is what interests philosophers the most. Hospers’ arguments differ from that of Descartes and also a great deal from the hypotheses presented by the skeptics; Descartes with the concept that knowledge itself proves existence and the skeptics presenting that nothing is known for certain. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
